This year has been one of celebrations. I turned 21, finished uni (for now) and my grandmother turned an unspecified age.
To commemorate her making it to the ripe old age of *undisclosed*, we hired the outdoor terrace at Our Place in Balmain for a night of food and festivities.
We could BYO wine so broke open the bubbles.
Since it was a private function, we had a set menu. First, warm bread with hommous, olives, olive oil and dukkah.
The first entrée was zucchini flowers, stuffed with ricotta, lemon & basil.
There was a good 20 minute wait between the two entrees, which was a little toooo long.
But when the second came along, it was crisp bangalow pork belly with seared hokkaido scallops and pumpkin puree. Both were lovely, although the pork belly could have been a little bigger!
We had a choice of mains. Herb & parmesan gnocchi, spinach, cherry tomato salsa, ricotta salata; crispy skinned barramundi, roast spring vegetables, honey balsamic, tahini, crispy leek; persian spiced lamb rump, white beans, quinoa & pomegranate salad or beef fillet medallions, mash, spring greens, sauce diane.
I went for the lamb.
The lamb was tender and so flavoursome, and the salad balanced the heaviness of the meat perfectly.
With any birthday, you need cake!
In this case, cake was honeycomb cheesecake with lemon curd and vanilla ice-cream. In other words, the sweetest thing you’ve ever eaten.
The other dessert option was churros with chocolate.
The cheesecake was sickly sweet – even the sweetest tooths struggled to finish it.
Overall, the service was fantastic, with our waiters tending to our every want and need. Besides the strangely long wait time between the entrees, it was an excellent night, full of fantastic food and company.
On a clear night, the spot would have been amazing too. Unfortunately, Sydney had other ideas and it poured…
Luckily, a little rain never killed nobody.
